Transcript Snapshot (Human Teachers vs AI Teachers)

Hey guys! You’re listening to the English Made Simple Show! This is episode number 322, number three hundred and twenty-two, numero trescientos veintidós.

Welcome back, amigos! You’re tuning in to the English Made Simple Show, and as always, I’m your host, Milena. Today, we have a really interesting topic to dive into: Human Teachers vs. AI – Which is Better for Learning English? It’s something many of you have probably thought about, especially with all the technology available these days.

We’ve talked about how AI can help us learn English, like in the previous episode where we explored using AI assistants to practice conversations. But today, we’re going to take a step back and compare the benefits of learning with human teachers versus AI. So, buckle up and get ready for a fun and thought-provoking episode!

Now, I know many of you might be wondering, “Should I focus on using AI tools to learn English, or should I stick with good old-fashioned human teachers?” Well, the answer isn’t so black and white. Both options have their pros and cons, and it really depends on what works best for you.

Let’s break it down.

Pros of AI in English Learning

First off, let’s talk about the shiny, new tech – AI. AI tools are becoming more advanced every day, and they offer some really cool features that make learning English super convenient.

Availability: AI-powered tools like Google Assistant, Duolingo, and even translation apps are available 24/7. You don’t have to wait for a scheduled lesson. If you feel like practicing at 2 am, AI is there for you. It’s like having a private tutor in your pocket!

Personalisation: One of the biggest advantages of AI is how it personalises your learning experience. These tools can track your progress and adapt lessons based on your strengths and weaknesses. For example, if you struggle with grammar, AI apps will give you more practice on that. It’s like having a lesson designed just for you.

Consistency: AI tools can help you stay on track with your learning. You can set daily reminders, and the apps will nudge you to practice. So, if you’re someone who struggles to stay consistent, AI can keep you in check.

Real-time feedback: Apps like ELSA Speak or Google Translate can give you instant feedback on your pronunciation or grammar. No waiting around – just real-time corrections and suggestions.

Cons of AI in English Learning

As amazing as AI is, it does have its limitations, amigos y amigas.

Lack of emotional connection: AI can respond quickly, but it can’t understand your emotions or offer encouragement in the same way a human teacher can. If you’re feeling frustrated or nervous, a robot won’t say, “Hey, it’s okay, keep going, you’re doing great!” AI is more about giving you data than emotional support.

Limited context understanding: AI tools are great with words, but they often miss the nuances of language – things like idioms, sarcasm, or cultural references. Sometimes, you might get an answer from AI that’s technically correct, but not quite right for the context.

This can be a big limitation, especially for those learning English as a second language. It’s not just about learning new vocabulary; it’s about understanding the context in which those words are used.

Motivation: While AI is consistent and always there, some people find it hard to stay motivated without the human touch. There’s something about having a person guide and encourage you that AI just can’t replicate – yet!

Pros of Human Teachers in English Learning

Now, let’s talk about the tried-and-true method – learning from human teachers. And trust me, human teachers bring so much to the table.

Personalized feedback: Human teachers don’t just correct your mistakes – they explain why you made them. They can adjust lessons on the spot if they see you’re struggling with a particular concept. And let’s face it, they have that human intuition that AI doesn’t have.

Cultural insights: Language isn’t just about words and grammar – it’s about culture! A human teacher can provide insights into real-world communication, like how to use slang, when to use formal vs. informal language, or even how to interpret body language. That kind of cultural context can make a huge difference in how you learn.

Empathy and encouragement: One of the best things about human teachers is the encouragement they provide. They understand your struggles because, in many cases, they’ve been through the same process themselves. They can offer emotional support when you’re feeling stuck or frustrated. This makes a big difference when you’re learning something as challenging as a new language.

Flexibility: Human teachers can adapt to your needs in real-time. If you’re having a bad day and struggling with grammar, they can switch things up and focus on something easier, like conversation practice. AI might keep pushing you through the same lesson, but a human teacher will change gears when needed.

Cons of Human Teachers

I said I wouldn’t mention cost, but here’s a challenge with human teachers:

Availability: Human teachers, as wonderful as they are, can’t always be available when you need them. They have their own schedules, and finding a time that works for both of you can sometimes be tricky, especially if you’re in different time zones.

Consistency: With human teachers, you might have lessons once or twice a week, but it’s up to you to stay consistent outside of those lessons. That’s where AI has a slight edge—it’s there to practice with you every day. With a teacher, you need to put in extra work between lessons.
